DO-IT-YOURSELF DEVICE FOR MONITORING RADON
Radon is a radioactive gas. High dose of radiation emitted by radon and its daughters could cause cancer. Commercially available electronic and non-electronic devices need to be sent to the suppliers for the analysis. We have developed a do-it-yourself device for monitoring radon gas. Our device is based on the solid state nuclear track etching.
Schematic presentation of radon detection device.
Alpha particles emitted by radon produce latent tracks in the track registering layer. The locations of the tracks are made visible to the naked eyes by etching. The concentration of the radon gas is determined from a tracks spots using a calibration chart/table. There is no do-it-yourself device in the market.
The major advantages of our device over the commercially available devices (including track-etching device) include: (1) it leaves a permanent record of the results and (2) being a do-it-yourself device, the user does not need to send the device to the supplier for analysis and interpretation of the results and (3) it would be less expensive than those available in the market.
